Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena

La cathédrale de Santa Maria est la référence religieuse de Madrid, elle se situe juste à côté du palais et c'est donc là que se rend le roi quand il participe à la messe. Commencée en 1883, elle ne fut achevée que 100 ans plus tard et fut consacrée par le Pape Jean Paul II.

Son nom aurait une origine arabe al mudayna,qui voudrait dire chateau. La légende veut que lorsque les Moors envahirent la capitale au VIIIème siècle, le peuple cacha une image de la vierge dans les murs de la ville. Image qui ne se revela qu'au XVème siècle lorsqu'un mur s'éffondra.

The Santa Maria cathedral is the religious reference in Madrid. It s located next to the Royal palace and is where the King goes to Church. Started in 1883, it was finished only 100 years later and has been consecrated by the Pope John Paul II.

The name os the cathedral might have a arabic origin "al mudayna" that means castle. The legend want that when the Moors invaded the capital in the VIII century, the people hidded the picture of the Virgin Mary in the walls of the city. Picture that only reveal itself in the XV century when a wall collapsed.
